My Story
My name is Dennis Rivera and I’m a Program Director
for BASE Camp Children Cancer Foundation.
We are praying that you guys would help us. BASE Camp would like
to create a Nautical Department for Children who are battling Cancer, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, and other rare/orphan
hematological diseases which can be such
mountains in children’s lives.
BASE Camp serves as the support “base” where patients and their
families can turn to for help and support on their journey.
Base Camp support over 1000 kids a year in Florida being
treated with cancer.
We want to be in a position to help these kids with social
support to help support them in their recovery. We are trying to implement a
Nautical Department. In the UK theirs a foundation called Ellen McArthur
foundation. But here in the state of Florida and we need your help. I
assure you; this will make a world of difference to the well-being of our kids
fighting cancer.
I’m not just a Project Director for BASE Camp, I’m also coming
to you as a father whose son at the age of six was diagnose with Osteosarcoma
(Bone Cancer). My son was under doctor’s care at Arnold Palmer in Orlando,
Florida for 1 1/2 years. During that time, my wife and I suffered an abnormal
amount of financial hardship and a lot of stress issues. Worrying, if our child
was going to make it through this terrible ordeal or be another statistic to
cancer. How do I explain to a six-year-old, that he has a terrible disease that
may take his life? Also having to take care of my other four children at
home.
Words cannot describe the stress of uncertainty. When we were
confronted, with my son having his right leg amputated or else the cancer was
going to take his life. My wife and I were fortunate. Our son lived. But there
are so many that didn’t. I can’t tell you how valuable this organization is to
the welfare of these kids being treated. We, tend to go through life thinking,
this can’t happen to our family. Believe me, I pray that it doesn’t. But, if it
does, I’m telling you from the bottom of my heart, and from my personal
experience. It’s nice to have an organization like Base Camp around.
Within the next year Base Camp plans to build a complete
Nautical Department for our children under cancer treatment. We plan on
supporting all hospitals in the State of Florida. I’m hoping
you could help our foundation to get the word out to what we are trying to do
here at BASE Camp with the hopes of receiving support.
The benefits of having a Nautical Department are
priceless: teaching children about the wonders of our ocean environment
and motivating them to learn about their world, is one of the best ways they
can learn about themselves and develop their interests, leading to future
careers in engineering, biology, chemistry, and hundreds of other fields.
But our main objective is to take our children under cancer
treatment out of a hospital environment and bring them out to the ocean or a
lake for a day boat ride. Which would provide a day without doctor’s, needles,
and away from the surroundings of what has them in the hospital in the first
places. It will also provide much needed R&R.
We also want to be in the position to bring families whose child
is not going to beat this horrible disease. Out, on a little
family vacation for some quality time together. Would you please help support
us? Any size donations is highly appreciated.
