We often think that desiring God and living according to His purpose may be interesting for theologians and philosophers but how does it help we ordinary people who wrestle with the daily challenges such as trouble marriages, paying bills, raising children, juggling with busy schedules and grappling with powerful temptations and sins.
It will be easier to understand what it means to desire God and live according to His purpose by reflecting to the letters Paul wrote to people he know in Ephesus. Though the circumstances where different for people living in that time and age, they still had their own everyday problems and challenges to face. This means Paul was very well aware of the problems and challenges that early believers were facing and for him it was the right step to write a letter that helps the people understand about God’s eternal purpose as it relates to them (church of Ephesus).
But why did Paul has to write letters to the church in Ephesus? Because Paul wanted to help people understand what God’s vision is for church. Often we Christians view church as a normal part of our lives. But for God, church is important. Jesus said – “I will build My church” Matthew 16:18. That’s exactly what Paul is doing. Jesus loved the church and gave Himself up for her – Ephesians 5:21. If we desire God and want to live according to His purpose, we need to understand God’s vision and purpose for the church and live accordingly.
There was no requirement for God to create humanity. Yet He chooses to create us so that we could fellowship with Him. But before He created us he knew that sin would creep in and a great sacrifice necessary to restore us to Himself and He concluded that we were worth it.
This is what the God says “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.” - Isaiah 43:10
If you desire God and want to live according to His purpose you need to first seek Him in His word. You should pray that Holy Spirit may provide you guidance to apply the Word to our lives. Desiring God and living for His purpose means giving up ourselves and desiring God’s will in our lives above everything else. When we are drawn to God and get to Know Him more, His desires will naturally become ours. As we mature in our desire to obey God’s command, our love for Him increases. Jesus in His own words said – “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
